Tilling and Odusai Schools, Uganda

About Tilling and Odusai Schools

With the completion of all renovation and construction projects, Mona's support for the Tilling and Odusai schools concluded in 2023 at their request.

A donor-supported educational initiative, Tilling and Odusai schools have been educating thousands of students in Uganda since the 1950's.

The Challenge

Tilling and Odusai are two rural communities in the Teso-speaking area of central Uganda. Two sister schools were founded in the 1950s by the Ugandan Baha’i community to meet the dire need for education in the villages, particularly for girls. The schools flourished for several years, serving thousands of children who later became prominent members of the community, including some members of the parliament. However, the Idi Amin government confiscated the schools and closed their doors. This was followed by several years of war that devastated the population, cattle and other property. Now, the community is trying to rebuild with meager resources. We want to help rebuild the schools and return them to their former excellence.

How we help

The Tilling and Odusai Schools are supported by several of our donors who have committed to help these schools with their vital services to the communities in which they serve.

With the completion of all identified renovation and construction projects, Mona's support for the Tilling and Odusai schools concluded in 2023 at their request.

2022 Achievements - General

  • Schools are continuously striving to improve the quality of life for their students.
  • Recent Improvements in the availability of clean water, food, and a cleaner school environment can be reported.
  • The schools allow no corporal punishment, uphold the equality of education for girls and boys, seek to address sexual abuse of women and girls.
  • The academic standards at both schools have improved. The two school districts of Ngora and Pallisa have selected the schools as model schools for their districts. The curriculum includes moral education for all students.

2022 Renovations

During the pandemic the schools were shut down for several months. Since the children were out of the schools, there was an opportunity to rebuild the schools more quickly.

  • At both schools’ all buildings have been remodeled and renovated.
  • All the existing teachers’ houses were renovated, and new bathrooms and kitchens were added as needed.
  • The staff offices, schools’ kitchens, staff bathrooms, and student bathrooms were renovated.
  • All 17 existing classrooms have been renovated with new doors, windows with glass, and new roofs. All mold has been removed from the walls.  All structures now have electricity for the first time.

2022 New Buildings

  • A library building was built at each school for the first time. These libraries are the only ones in the two districts. Each library has two wings, one for the students and one for the use of the community adults.
  • Multiple new teachers’ homes and bathrooms and kitchens were built at both schools.
  • New classroom blocks were built. So at this time, the classrooms all have 85 or fewer students, down from the previous 120 students per classroom. Hundreds of new desks were made, so all the children now can sit at desks, instead of on the floor.
  • Solar panels were placed, and they provide many of the teachers’ homes and classrooms with electricity.
  • For the first time both schools are fenced and have entrance gates.
