Lila Chitayat is currently a high school senior living in San Diego, California. Her work with Mona and Baha’i identity has greatly influenced my dedication to international social justice advocacy, and inspired her interest in humanitarianism and economic empowerment through education, especially for women. After receiving the opportunity to visit Mona’s project in Manaus, Brazil, ADCAM, and seeing the impact that education had not only on the students but on the community as a whole, she was motivated to found the Bishop’s Global Citizens Club at her high school to champion Mona’s mission of gender equality and universal education. Since then, she has worked with Mona to help them acquire NGO status and now serves as Mona’s Youth United Nations Representative. She is passionate about female leadership in the corporate world and interned with GlobeFlex, a capital investment firm, to study sustainable investing strategies and the benefits of female leadership, and explored her interest in entrepreneurship by co-founding her own non profit organization aiming to provide children of local refugee families with the chance to engage in self-expression through art. During her free time, she enjoys cooking and spending time with her family and friends.
I support Mona because they are unique in that they support pre-existing, grassroot educational initiatives created by locals in the communities they are helping who know how to best address the needs of the students there. Furthermore, the dedication to Mona’s mission that the staff and supporters constantly show has instilled within me a true love for serving others and given me a stronger sense of identity as a youth activist for gender equality and educational equity.
