Lila’s Summer Read-a-Thon to Support the Barli Institute

Lila Chitayat Lila Chitayat

Hi! My name is Lila Chitayat and I’m a rising senior living in San Diego, California. I’ve been involved with the Mona Foundation ever since I visited Mona’s project ADCAM in Manaus, Brazil three years ago. This experience opened my eyes to the impact Mona’s commitment to providing universal education had not only on the students, but on the students’ community as well. Since then, I’ve started the Global Citizens Club at my high school affiliated with Mona, which aims to raise awareness for Mona’s cause and champion Mona’s message through speeches detailing my club’s experiences with Mona, fundraising to support Mona’s projects, and hosting regular meetings to discuss Mona’s work and it’s importance. I’ve also been appointed to Mona’s Youth Advisory Board, where I’ve been able to become more involved in learning about Mona’s current and new projects and how we can best support them.
Although Covid-19 has limited the work I’m able to do with Mona, I still want to do my part to help support their projects, which is why I’ve chosen to launch my own Read-a-Thon event to support the Barli Institute, one of Mona’s partner organizations based in Indore, India which trains and empowers young women from about 800 villages to become economically independent agents of social change in their communities. I’m asking for your help in sponsoring one or more of my 15 minute reading sessions with any amount you wish. 100% of your donation will go to keeping the young women at Barli Institute safe and fed during COVID19, and to their continuing education. $66 supports one girl for 1 month of the 6 month training course, including room, board, and health care.
Help keep me reading this summer and join me in supporting education!

About Mona Foundation

We support grassroots initiatives that provide education to all children, increase opportunities for women and girls, and emphasize service to the community.

The schools that we support serve marginalized communities globally. They focus on academic excellence, fine arts and character education to develop capable, ethical, and altruistic leaders who contribute to the betterment of their families, communities, and ultimately their nation.  In 2017 we supported the education of 258,000 students, teacher and parents in 18 projects in 10 countries.

We focus our support on these three areas:

  1. Access – We work with local organizations who know best how to meet the needs of their communities through providing access to education by building classrooms or providing scholarships.
  2. Empower Women & Girls – We believe that empowering women has multiplier effects and benefits all.  Women spend 90% of their earned income on their family and directly impact the economic growth of their communities.
  3. Teacher Training – We emphasize and support teacher training to ensure a high quality of learning and commitment to service.
