Tilling and Odusai Schools, Uganda

About Tilling and Odusai Schools

Tilling and Odusai are two rural communities in the Tesoapeaking area of central Uganda. These two sister schools were founded in the 1950s by the Ugandan Baháʼí community to meet the dire need for education in the villages, particularly for girls. These are the only public schools in the area.

The Challenge

The schools flourished for several years, serving thousands of children who later became prominent members of the community, including some members of the parliament. However, the Idi Amin government confiscated the schools and closed their doors. This was followed by several years of war that devastated the population, cattle and other property. Now, the community is trying to rebuild with the resources they have. We want to help rebuild the schools and return them to their former excellence.

The Solution: Tilling and Odusai Schools

High-Quality Education

These two primary schools are both in Eastern Uganda, in Odusai in Pallisa District and in Tilling in Kumi District, with about 1,000 students and a solid reputation for excellence. The school in Tilling is now considered to be the top school in the district. The target population for the schools is elementary-aged children in the district between 1st grade and 7th grade. The two school districts of Ngora and Pallisa have selected the schools as model schools for their districts. The curriculum includes moral education for all students.

These schools are continuously striving to improve the quality of life for their students. Recent improvements were made in the availability of clean water, food, and a cleaner school environment. The schools allow no corporal punishment, uphold the equality of education for girls and boys, seek to address sexual abuse of women and girls.

How we help

The Tilling and Odusai Schools are supported by several of our donors who have committed to help these schools with their vital services to the communities in which they serve. Some assistance provided to date are building a library, thorough repair of the buildings, and housing for teachers.
