Tierra Santa Home
Honduras
Meeting Basic Needs
In Honduras, 14.9% of the population lives on less than one dollar per day. 35.7% of the population lives on less than 2 dollars per day. When times are hard and parents cannot feed their children, they are often abandoned and left to fend for themselves. The Tierra Santa Home (Hogar) reaches out to provide the most basic rights of every human being, especially children: Shelter, food, education and above all, love.
Hogar Tierra Santa, located in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in Latin America, is home to 130 children, abandoned by their parents or orphaned. Most are girls ranging in age from 9 months to 18 years. Their needs are met by donations from a number of charitable organizations, including Mona Foundation, that have come together as a “village” to care for these children and do all they can every day to lift their spirits and fortunes.
Last year, the children went above and beyond their goals and obtained good grades in school, despite the ridicule they receive because they are “orphans.” One student who attends college in Colombia came “Home” to visit and show the other children the possibilities for the future. Rosita, one of our little girls, had surgery to correct a deformation of her left foot. The operation was successful and she can now wear shoes for the first time.
Agricultural Project
The agricultural project is progressing as well. Recently, five of our oldest boys, Omar, Luis, Enrique, Jesus and Isman moved out to live on the farm. They've worked tirelessly and as a result, we've made great strides. The mangoes are growing rapidly; the tamarind trees are already producing and have provided the Hogar with lots of tasty juice; the pigs have been fattening up and soon will provide the Hogar with lots of meat. Goats and chickens also roam the farm and will provide the children with good protein. Both of the lagoons are filled and stocked with Tilapia, a very tasty fish that the Hogar fries up to the delight of all the children upon harvest.
