Nur University
Bolivia
". . . To raise the human resources of Bolivia and make high school students, the teachers, and the women, the least considered and long-suffering segment of the Bolivian population, agents and leaders of community development."
"Universidad Nur is a Bolivian non-profit educational institution focused on the social and economic development of the region and the country. It was legally founded on the 23rd of May 1982, and classes commenced on May 1985 after obtaining the supreme decree 20441 on March 28, 1984." This is Nur University's legal description.
Its story is more like a tribute to the spirit of our humanity. Twenty years ago, in the heart of Bolivia, the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, the handful of founders of Nur university, motivated by the desperate need for trained professionals to contribute to the development of the country, with no resources or promise of outside support, conceived the idea and vision of this institution of higher learning to single handedly raise the social and economic status of a whole nation.
Their visionary learning model integrates concepts of development with the rigors of academic excellence and capacity building components of moral leadership and community service. Their goal is to raise the human resources of Bolivia and make high school students, the teachers, and the women, the least considered and long-suffering segment of the Bolivian population, agents and leaders of community development.
Twenty years later, and now completely self-sufficient, thousands have gone through its open doors, trained, transformed, and committed to improving the lot not only themselves but also of others in their communities.
