Maryland Statewide Equity Resource Center

When new foreign students first enter s school, sometimes it's hard to know what to do first. Here are seven activity-based tips to get them started.
African Folk Tales – Deep in the Bush
The stories used in this lesson were collected by the author while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, West Africa. These tales have been kid-tested and approved around the world with students from kindergarten through grade eight. These stories, and any other African tales, work as a great introduction to the wealth of culture and history that Africa has to offer.

China: Lunar Calendar
The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly calendar like the western calendar, except that the start of the lunar year is based on the cycles of the moon. Part of a curriculum package that received a 1994 Santa Clara County Reading Council Award. It can be very useful to classroom teaching for grades 3-5 by bringing cultural diversity into the education system.
China: Bound Feet
A Chinese prince began the practice of foot binding because he loved the small 'lily feet' of his concubine. Thus traditional Chinese values for over 1000 years dictated that the feet of young girls should be bound to keep them small. 'Lily feet', as they were called, were thought to be very dainty and beautiful and a symbol of gentility and high-class. Although the term sounded harmless, it was really a very cruel practice.
China: Abacus
A lesson plan for grade levels 3-5 to help students understand the main concept of the abacus which has been used to serve people to add, subtract, multiply, and divide since ancient times.
Connectivity: World Cultures: Middle School Lessons
This lesson includes information about the use of telecommunications to learn about other cultures. It gives an example of what can be done with worldwide connections through the use of email and conferencing.
Culturally Relevant Lesson for African American Students
Culturally relevant activity for grades 6-12 which can be incorporated into a unit based on the parallel struggles in South Africa and the United States. The content and instructional methods place the African Diaspora experience at the center of learning and provide a way for teachers to tap into the thinking of their students.

A culminating activity based on students' explorations and experiences. As a result of cross-cultural communication and cooperation, students may design and publish a web page about the cultures which they have been studying.
