Digital Promise, USA

Closing the Digital Information Gap

Computers and the Internet are dramatically changing the way we live, work, and play. Yet, study after study has shown that we face a significant and troubling "digital divide" between those who have access to online information and those who do not. Digital Promise is a non-profit dedicated to closing this information gap by promoting and expanding access to computer technology in low-income housing communities.

Digital Promise focuses on the needs of residents in low-income, elderly, and disabled housing communities in Washington. By supporting Computer Learning Centers in these facilities, we help the most underserved populations learn to use computers and the Internet. A diverse and powerful coalition of people and resources, Digital Promise works in partnership with the private sector, community-based non-profits, government agencies, affordable housing centers and residents to realize the vision of a community where no one is left behind. To date, the organization has helped start and maintain over fifty Computer Learning Centers in low-income housing developments in Washington, and distributed over $400,000 in funds, technical assistance, hardware, software, and project support.

Digital Promise is committed to the long-term sustainability of each of the centers it serves. In order to achieve this, Digital Promise offers a variety of programs to its centers including Center Lifeline, Funding Empowerment, Tech Knowledge, and Community Connection programs. We believe our commitment to the centers, combined with the programs, will ensure the longevity of each computer learning center.

Our Core Values include building a diverse community, working as a team, transferring knowledge through mentoring and coaching, accepting personal responsibility and fostering personal integrity, building an environment where it is safe to express opinions and creativity, being held accountable by producing measurable results, and fostering hope and opportunity within the community.
