CORDE Honors & Grants
2008 Journey Grants $10,000
In October 2008, Journey Charitable Foundation approved a grant of $10,000 to build a new Center of Learning in 2009 and to provide the annual maintenance costs for an already existing Center in rural Cambodia. With this generous addition to support already in place the Centers of Learning in rural Cambodia now stand at 9. With the continued support of those centers already built and the expansion annually of new ones, the CORDE dream of creating educational opportunities for those who haven't had this in the past, is gradually coming true.
2009 Anika James Scholarship Fund
The Anika James Scholarship Fund, created in the Fall of 2008 through the Mona Foundation, has determined that the first project they will support will be to build a new Center of Learning in Cambodia in 2009. The James family worked very hard in 2008 to raise funds in their daughter's memory with a special memorial event. They desire that other children have the educational opportunities that Anika had.
2008 Children Helping Children
The Egrari children of Bellevue, Washington, recently participated in the Crayons Pink Lemonade Brigade in June, 2008, which challenged 100 children across the country to get out a sell lemonade for their favorite charity. In turn, 'Crayons' provided each participant with 100 cans of their pink lemonade to sell. Nigel, Sophia and Layli decided to support Mona Foundation. And in light of Nigel's recent trip to Cambodia with his mother, they decided to support CORDE.
On June 20th, the children, along with a friend, Kelsey Johnson, decorated their lemonade stand and baked lots of brownies to sell as well. Then, on June 21st, they set up their stand outside the house and had a ton of fun for three hours jumping up and down getting attention for their cause. Many passersby were very generous and contributed more than the $1 for the drinks and brownies. The children had hoped to raise $50, but ended up raising $146 which just made their day! They all agreed that they had a ton of fun while also doing something good for kids half way across the world.
Crafts Parties for Cambodia
A small Health for Humanity group in North Carolina was wanting to start a Social and Economic Development project to benefit children's education. They studied diligently for over a year, but progress was slow. How could their small efforts and meager resources make a difference? Finally, they realized that they could raise funds for an education project elsewhere in a country where their resources could really do a lot for children.
The group selected this project in Cambodia because one small donation could provide resources for a month of schooling. They decided they could teach others to make some beautiful origami ornaments at a craft party, and the fee could be a month of Cambodian education. The group set a goal and met to learn the craft so they could teach it. In the first session 4 months of education funds were raised.
Then the first party was held for others, and in one afternoon raised the funds to total a full year of educational expenses for a village class! This group has plans to continue with more crafts parties to provide these educational resources. People who have heard about this idea are enjoying the chance to learn of this worthy Cambodian project.
