Badi School Honors & Grants 1999–2003

2003 Moral Leadership

The ministry of education of Panama has adopted the Moral Leadership curriculum, and is sponsoring once a month full page advertisements in one of the national papers so that the content of this curriculum is freely and quickly accessible to all the teachers and educators in the country.

2003 Library Building

With the groundbreaking ceremony for its library, Badi School begins the first phase of its development plan towards establishing a university. The goal: Badi University in 2006. A grant for $60,000 over three years has been received to build this library from a donor family, in honor of their late beloved father.

2003 Scholarships

We are very pleased to say that Mona Foundation has again received four scholarship grants for the 2003-2004 academic year and tell you the story of the recipients.

Gina R. Puerta, age 12, 8th year
Gina lives with her mother, Lorena De la Sera, who works as a babysitter. Her father passed away in 1999. Their income is less than $200 per month. They live in a two-room house that was left to them when Mrs. De la Sera's father died

Marcjani A. Batista, age 14, 9th year
Marcjani lives with her mother, Janina Alemán, and her grandmother. Her mother works as a police officer with a monthly income of $300. Mrs. Alemán has another four year old child and has never been married. The family lives in a two-bedroom rented house.

Jennifer Ortega, age 15, 10th year
Jennifer lives with her mother, Maria González, and Maria's husband, Juan Carlos Díaz. Jennifer has one brother, age 11, and one sister, age 8. Mr. Diaz is a Peruvian citizen. He was working for two years as a taxi driver but without a license. When he was detected, the traffic office would no longer allow him to work as a driver and assessed him a very large fine which he is paying. Last year they decided to have Jennifer work to get some income and pay for her half-brother's schooling. We recommended that Jennifer not discontinue her education because she is a brilliant student at Badi School and was very close to finishing high school. We invited her to work at the school as a secretary assistant to cover some of her school expenses. The family has a small neighborhood business selling fruits and vegetables with an income of $370 per month, but the couple gives preference to their sons in all school expenses.

Victor M. Muñoz, age 5, kindergarten
Victor is a beautiful young boy who lives with his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Muñoz and older brother, Vitten, age 18, and sister, Siara, age 17. His father is a handyman, and his mother is a babysitter. They have a very small house that they built themselves. In one room they have a common dormitory, and the other room is both a kitchen and Mr. Muñoz's workshop. Even though their house is in very poor condition, there is much unity in this family and they share everything. The family has a monthly income of $250. This is the first time that Victor will go to school. He is admired for his courtesy and manners. This second photograph shows Victor two years later as a healthy and successful student at Badi School.
