Badi School & University
San Miguelito, Panama
From a one room school to a University: Individuals do make a difference!
Humble Beginnings
Started in 1993 by a caring couple with slender means, Badi School began as a kindergarten with 12 students. Now, fourteen years later, it's a thriving school with 290 students. 40% of them receive scholarships. In an area where the average income is $200 per month, 70% of children are born to single mothers and four out of ten children don't have access to education, Badi School is renowned for its academic excellence, and arts and music programs. It serves children from K-12 and has 1500 students on the waiting list. List year, six of the seven graduates of Badi earned the highest scores on the Panama University entrance exam and were accepted with full four-year scholarships.
Badi University Development Plan
In 2006, we assisted Badi School to build a two-story community library, two classrooms and a large common area, to be used as both an auditorium and a gym. Completing the library paved the way for the next phase of the development plan: Purchase of the neighboring property at the cost of $30,000 to allow for construction of more classrooms, doubling the capacity of the school in preparation for establishment of the Teacher Certification Program as a prelude to the full four year University. Also in 2006, the generous Edna Callahan Connolly Scholarship funded the summer arts program.
In 2007, we will continue to support the Badi Development Plan, including completion of the auditorium with appropriate lighting, folding chairs and fans, and the drainage system, retaining walls and a security fence for the newly acquired property. Plans have already been approved to construct four additional classrooms and provide much needed scholarships for four students.
