Badi University in the Making
The tradition of generous giving so exemplified by the lives of Torrez family in Panama continues here in the US by a generous family who wishes to remain anonymous.
Their act of service is simple yet profound. The family heard about the Badi School and its history and achievements, development plan, and the dream of taking the next step to grow into a Badi University. Then they committed $60,000.00 to build it over 3 years to honor their late beloved father. "Our father was a person of unshakable integrity and generosity. We want to honor him the way he would have liked," explains a member of this family.
Mona Foundation as the recipient and administrator of this grant is working very closely with the donor family and with the Badi School to implement this 3-phased development plan to be completed in 2005-6.
The Library associated with this development plan was dedicated as Rabbani Library in a ceremony in March 2005.
As a result of its excellent reputation, Badi School is now in a position to extend its educational reach by establishing the Badi University. Presently, the school has 2000 students on its waiting list. In response to this overwhelming need, and in order to accommodate the continuing educational needs of its students, Badi School plans to double its enrollment capacity in three years and continue to build its student base before inaugurating the Badi University by 2008.
In July 2006, Mona Foundation visitors traveled to Panama to see the school. Mona Foundation had provided the school with $30,000 to purchase the land across from the school for the development plan of the University. As our Mona Foundation representatives met with the Torrez family on the recent trip to Panama, they learned that a much larger and better parcel of land exactly next to the school had become available at a very good price; the owner’s father had bequeathed it for a “good cause.”
Mr. Torrez had calculated the cost of this land in comparison to the anticipated income of the schools, to assure they could afford the land, and went to the bank to borrow the remaining $20,000 to make the whole purchase of the larger land possible. This land will allow the school to grow in the next few years without running out of space again! Based on the Development Plan, the next steps are to build additional classrooms before December. With 2000 students on the waiting list, they will then proceed to build the “Dream University,” anticipating completion within two years.
