Love of children made it possible
Responding to Community Needs
ADCAM began operations in 1985 as an orphanage in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Manaus, Brazil. Since then, it has grown into an educational institution that serves over 700 students per day from pre-school through university, in addition to 400 “street children” who receive free after-hours quality education. Fifty-percent of the students are on full scholarships. ADCAM addresses the root cause of poverty by providing education to the underserved, and expands services with outreach programs to help at-risk teens, women, families and the elderly. Tahirih College of Education graduates about 100 teachers a year. Among those graduates are some of the same little 11-year olds who came to ADCAM ten years before to ask for classes for themselves. Mansour Technical College, at full capacity, will graduate 4,000 students a year. Over the past two decades ADCAM has also spread rural education programs to river villages far from Manaus.
Expanded Community Services Offered
In 2006, Ferial Sami, the director of ADCAM, was honored by the Brazilian Parliament with their nation's equivalent of the Medal of Honor, in recognition of her services to the people of the Amazon and to the nation as a whole. Last year we provided ADCAM scholarships, a computer lab and ongoing computer maintenance. In 2007, we will continue support for 26 children awaiting scholarships. And we have committed to build and equip two science laboratories which will serve all of ADCAM’s programs including the Vocational School, the College of Education, the Institute of Technology, the outreach programs for street children and the rural education initiatives.
In addition, we will provide support for the translation of the SAT Tutorial Learning System which allows rural children, youth and adults to complete their basic education while remaining in their own villages, and teaches them how to promote local development and community well-being.
