Association for the Cohesive
Development of the Amazon — ADCAM
Amazonas, Brazil
From an orphanage to a
Technical College:
Love of children made it possible
Growth and Expansion of Service
The Association for the Cohesive Development of the Amazon (ADCAM) began in 1985 as a small orphanage in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Manaus, Brazil. Since then, it has grown into a nationally recognized educational institution serving over 1100 students per day from pre-school through university. In addition, more than 400 “street children” receive free quality after-hours care and education.
Fifty percent of ADCAM students are on full scholarships and more children are waiting. ADCAM addresses the root causes of poverty, providing education for children and outreach programs to help at-risk teens, women, families and the elderly. ADCAM's Tahirih College of Education graduates 100 teachers a year. Many are former students of other ADCAM programs who stay to teach and give back in their local communities. And Masrour Technical College, at full capacity, will graduate 4,000 students a year.
Recognition and Response to
Community Needs
ADCAM's Director, Ferial Sami, was awarded Brazil's equivalent of the Medal of Honor in 2006 for services to the children and families of the Amazon region and to Brazil as a whole. In 2007, in response to ADCAM's request, we provided scholarships totaling $13,000 for 26 children. We also raised $45,000 to build and equip two science labs to serve all of ADCAM's educational programs including middle school and high school, the College of Education, the Institute of Technology, programs for street children and the rural development initiatives.
We still seek additional scholarships for waiting children and $16,643 to support translations of the SAT Tutorial Learning System. This proven program allows rural children and youth to get a basic education without having to leave their home villages and teaches them how to promote development in their own communities.
